Y4 Roman Roads

To support our understanding of Roman technologies in our ‘Legendary Legionaries’ learning journey, we researched Roman Roads in Britain. We found out that many of the roads we use today have been built on top of the original Roman Roads, and that the Romans developed the road system to help transport goods, and soldiers, across their empire.

We then had a go at producing our own roads, using materials to create the different layers needed to make a lasting surface for horses, carts and feet to use. We noticed that the top layer, called ‘pavimentum’ in Latin, is a very similar word to our word ‘pavement’.
