FS2 The Leaf Man

This week we shared the story ‘The Leaf Man’ by Lois Elhert. It was a magical story which swept us outside among the trees as we hunted for leaves on our own school grounds. Using an identification sheet to help us, we found Sycamore, Beech, Birch, Horse and Sweet Chestnut leaves and ivy. Some of […]

Y4 Natural Balms

Taking inspiration from stories of some of the people of the Amazon Rainforest, Y4 created a balm useful as a remedy for insect bites and stings from plantain (the grass not the fruit), olive oil and beeswax. We boiled the oil, then added the plantain and simmered for another 10 minutes, then we strained the […]

FS2 Apple Stew

A warm welcome back to Autumn 2. We kick started outdoor learning this week with some tasty apple stew. We collected the apples from the tree on our school grounds, peeled and chopped them, before stewing them on the camp fire. The children were ready, safe and respectful around the fire and when using the […]

Y5 Shelter Building – Ridge-Line Shelters

Y5 have been developing their outdoor learning skills by building shelters using tarps, staves and rope. They learnt how to tie and lash using clove hitches and shear lashings; creating supported and free-standing shelters. They ensured that their rope-work was very tight, creating a rigid shelter that could keep out the wind and rain. Alongside […]

Year 3 Healthy Walk

Last week, Year 3 set out on a healthy walk to Ecclesall Woods. We were looking for evidence of things that had been eaten (and the flap jacks didn’t count!). We used the evidence to think about the food chains that might exist in our local environment: producers, consumers, prey and predators. It was also […]

Y2 – Maths – Empty number lines!

Today, the children took their learning about empty numberline and went outside to apply it! They worked with a partner and made their own 0-10 or 0-100 numberlines and tested one another to estimate the position of different numbers.

Y4 River Fieldwork

To tie in with our ‘Amazonian Adventure’, Y4 learned about the features of rivers, and how water flows through them. To embed the new vocabulary and test out some ideas (hypotheses) we had come up with, we visited Old Hay Brook on a Geography Field Trip. This involved lots of hands on, practical learning, but […]
