Y4 Bread Baking

For the final piece of learning in our ‘Food for Thought’ learning journey, Y4 spent a week studying bread, including where it comes from and how it is made. We started off by finding out about the many types of bread that are found around the world, then discovered how the different parts of a grain of wheat are used to make different types of flour. We also looked at how wheat is grown, harvested and then turned into flour, both nowadays and more traditionally.

We then tasted various white, brown and wholemeal loaves to work out what our favourite flavour and texture of bread is. We used this information to plan out what sort of loaf we wanted to bake, and what type of flour to use. Finally we got to bake, taste and evaluate our loaves. We’re pretty pleased with the results…
