Y4 Flight Investigations – STEM Learning

As part of our Learning Journey, we used Bear Grylls jumping out of a ‘flying car’ as inspiration to find out more about flight. We started off by thinking about the forces involved: thrust, drag, lift and gravity, and how these are affected by the mass of the object trying to fly.

We then investigated flight scientifically, thinking about fair testing, dependent, independent and controlled variables. We tested different straw gliders, then tested paper helicopters.

Next, we learned about electricity and electrical circuits, then used this knowledge to create simple circuits. Then we applied this knowledeg to creat fan-powered cars and work out which fan worked best.

Finally, we investigated parachutes through using our special parachute launcher (as we don’t have a school plane to drop them from!).
